im back with my 8n again after a big harvest. I was having issues getting it to start and after checking compression fuel and spark decided it was a timing issue. I reset the timing and it fired right up turned it off and tried to start it again and will only fire if i hold the swtich down. any ideas?

I have three wires on the Solenoid one from the battery and one that goes to the terminal? Under the ammeter and the starter switch

I saw an ad for a really weird"rare" 1957 9n. They probably had problems too!

Did some tinkering and if I loosed the screw and turn the distributor a little it will run but when I turn it off it won't start until I turn the distributor again. I'm assuming that means the weights are stiff or bad correct?

Ok so I have done this a few times now and I get the timing set to where it is running smooth but has no power and dies under load. Also if I get it set to where it runs nice then let it set over night it does not run smooth.

I vote with R Geiger. Check the distributor pass-thru insulator assembly for the wire from the coil, as well as the copper strip that connects to the points. A bad insulator ir cracked/bent copper strip will cause the symptoms you describe.

My 8N just has a wire with double heat shrink insulation going thru the distributor directly to the points. I got tired of having problems with the original pieces.

I have replaced the entire stud assembly and wire going from the coil to the stud. I just double checked and could not find a short.

Ok it feels like I'm going in circles but I'm going to try this again. I keep having to reset the time on my 8n after I reset it and tighten everything down it runs great but has reduced power (think the timing may be a little off) but then I turn it off and try to start it again but it's out of time. Firing on 3 instead of 1. I have followed your instructions and the book exactly and it runs and sounds great until I turn it off and try to restart. Any ideas on what I could check next? Thinking it could be in the distributor itself?
