(quoted from post at 13:17:53 07/01/16) very loud 8N - replaced muffler. Could it be just gasket? Or entire manifold?

A stethoscope comes in real handy for stuff like that. Hear a noise? Move the stethoscope around where you think it is and you'll hear where it's the loudest.

When I had a leaking exhaust manifold, it sounded like a ticking sound. I could hold my fingers around #4 and actually feel the leak.

No need to remind you that things can get mighty hot around mufflers and manifolds. A leaking exhaust pipe or muffler is not an urgent fix but a leaking exhaust manifold needs to be replaced as soon as possible before the leak starts to corrode the engine block.

Which is #4? Hard to feel anything leaking with the blowback from the fan.

4 is closest to the drivers seat. Rarely
does the gasket fail w/o damage to the
block. Could be from the clamp too. Post
back with what you find.

in my case, the block was fine, but the manifold behind #4 was eroded. not knowing what to look for at first, i simply replaced the gasket, and naturally, the new gasket gave out soon afterwards. at that point, i did some reading, and when i took the manifold off again, i saw the problem. new manifold and new gasket this time, no problems since.

Laying a straight edge on the manifold while you have it out will give you an idea of how it's going to seal. Intake manifolds are pretty cheap so unless an old manifold looks very very good, I'd just replace it.

Checked #4 area - very hot - others OK despite fan blowback which is much cooler - so looks like new manifold and gasket needed. Hope nuts aren't frozen on too badly.

When you remove them make sure they're brass nuts. If not get a set of brass nuts.

Replaced manifold & gasket - cracks between 1&2 and 3&4 with carbon deposits around 1 & 4 - gasket there gone.

Less noisy but some hot exhaust coming from clamp area joining exhaust manifold & pipe. There's no gasket there just metal on metal! Should the be ANY exhaust there?

New manifold is different from old in missing a type of port with valve stem which seemed blocked anyway in the old manifold.

are u sure u didn't put the clamp on upside down? it will only work properly one way. mine doesn't leak there, i assume a leak there is not normal.

When putting that manifold clamp on make sure the big side of the flange is down. Hold you exhaust pipe up to the flange and visually check how it fits the flange. You may need to take a ball peen hammer and tap the pipe flange around the exhaust flange for better seating.

Last time I put a new exhaust pipe and muffler on mine the pipe flange looked good for lining up with the manifold. I held the pipe up to the manifold and placed a small hydraulic jack under the pipe. Use piece of wood between the jack and the pipe. I pumped the jack up until the pipe was tight against the manifold then tightened the clamp. It sealed up fine the first time.

Reversed the clamp and got better results; I saw that the clamp is made to be put on one way. Thanks for tip.

Now on to next problem of faulty/no generator output.
