8n Sherman Combo Removal

My Dad is trying to remove a Sherman Combo transmission from a 1948 8n with front mount distributor. He has the tractor split, now he has a question as to whether the clutch cross shaft has to be removed? and if so, how does the pin holding the clutch fork come out? It looks like the Sherman may tilt and come out without removing the clutch shaft, but he is not sure. Has any one done this before? Thanks

Yes,
I removed the cross shaft by driving out the fork pin.
I believe you need all the room to be able to properly move the combo in and out
during the process. Especially when adjusting the bearing preload.
I replaced the cross shaft bushings and put a removable bolt with locking nuts
instead of having to drive a pin out for the fork in the future.
It came in handy whe I went back in to replace the step-up with a combo.

If you just want to get it out and forget the rest, I still think it will be tough to get the combo out. It is a big hunk.
With the fork free from the throw out bearing, tilt the fork so you can dive the pin
out with the fork inverted.
You may want to help your dad so he can stay pure in his vocabulary, if you know
what I mean.
It is tough to get the pin out using a good pin punch and sledge hammer.
Hope yours is easier than mine was.

Removal of the clutch shaft with the throw out bear fork is not necessary, Just slide to one side and point the fork down. Unbolt the front 4
bolts on the input shaft nose cone and remove. Unbolt the four bolts on the back of the case, tip the case forward and work in over the shaft,
remove the four allen head bolt on the mounting bracket on the bellhgousing trans wall and you're done. Be sure to have a pail to catch any oil
when you tilt the case.

I guess either way would be correct. Just a lot easier replacing the gasket than fighting with that pin.

Thanks to everyone that responded. My Dad was able to get the Sherman out this morning. He ended up removing the input shaft and pivoting the transmission over the clutch fork and cross shaft. Worked great! I included a couple pictures of the transmission.
