starter update!

it is back in, i believe mother teresa would cuss like a sailor if she had to put one in. now the starter is still making the
windup noise much like when it gets stuck, now i know that "stuck" is not the problem, teeth look good on both. what can cause
the starter to respond like that? can it be a week solenoid? or is starter ready for a rebuild, my plan is to purchase a new
starter(would like recommendations on what to buy for my sidemount 8n), so the tractor won't be down while i take apart and learn
all about starters, thanks for the warnings that cuss words will be flying my neighbors thank you

Bruce is RIGHT, do not get a new starter. Your problem is the bendix needs to be replaced. Best to take your starter out take it apart, clean the insides from the carbon dirt, install NEW Brushes. If you can't do this take it to a repair shop that does starters and generators etc.

Vidaliaman, When you say, now the starter is still making the windup noise much like when it gets stuck. Is the starter motor running and that is what you call the windup noise? If so then the drive is not engaging into the flywheel and your bendix drive is bad.Replace it with the new style drive sold here.

i do believe the bendix is not working, you have talked me into rebuilding the starter you seem real firm on that what is the reasoning?

Wirring noise is spinning and not engaging.

Prime causes are bad drive, greasy drive and shaft, bent shaft, or slow starter.. Bad connections, etc..

" what is the reasoning?"

Two reasons.

First, chances are 8 out of 10 you only need a bendix.

Secondly, even if you needed a starter, never buy anything new on these tractors that can be rebuilt.

I?ve been working on old cars, trucks & tractors now for over 50 years. Whenever possible, I get OEM component parts rebuilt. Given the high probability that any new component part purchased for an N tractor is made somewhere overseas w/o adequate quality control, chances are very good that you will be disappointed.

If you do not have a local rebuild shop, give these guys a call for a quote & shipping info:

Automotive Manufacturers Inc
2400 N Lombardy St Richmond, VA 23220

(804) 321-6861

They do mail order work. They rebuild carbs, clutches, pressure plates, water pumps, alternators, generators, starters & reline brakes.

I agree with Bruce. All "new" starters and rebuilts sold these days are crap. Find a legitimate re-builder and go that route. You will not be disappointed.

glad to know your feelings, i'm pretty sure it's the bendix also but i will be rebuilding(cleaning) this starter for my own education, wanna know how it works, thanks again

WGM, I agree with you and Bruce as well.
IF and that's a big if, his starter is still original.
In the last 5 years I have only bought one with an original on it.
The rest had already been replaced with aftermarket.
Having those rebuilt is nearly as costly as a "new" replacement.
Changing the drive gear on the other hand is well worthwhile.
