electrical fix, gotta question

first of all, bruce you were correct, i was arcing from the stud at the bottom of the distributor, this has happened before however my question is where can you buy this plastic thing that the stud slides into to keep it from arcing on the distributor? and has anyone ran the coil wire through the little stud hole and attached directly to the points using the sheathing to protect from arcing?

dave

That would work for a ONE cylinder engine, but you have a "DISTRIBUTOR". What does it mean, distributor? It has to distribute the
spark to 4 cylinders, sometimes more sometimes less. You have a ROTOR inside the distributor to "spread out the spark" to other
cylinders.

yup, i understand that however the little copper piece that connects distributor stud to the points connection also where the condenser connects to, why not run the coil wire through the hole and connect to the points by passing the stud and copper connector. using the sheathing of the wire to keep from arcing on the distributor

i may have been looking at this so long i'm loosing my mind

there is a plastic part the insulates the stud from the distributor, is this part available?

Seems to me that the plastic insert for upholstery pins will work, or maybe the plastic insert you screw a licence plate into. HTH

(quoted from post at 17:05:20 06/29/16) now thats a thought, any other ideas?
ou can just run the insulated wire thru the hole all the way to points, skipping, stud, strip, insulator & bushing ….
.or you can buy those parts, using the part numbers that Bruce already provided you with.

that's a good idea however YT only recognizes the copper strip, where should i shop for the following?
strip, 12209, screw 350032-S, 12233 bushing & 12234 insulator
thanks dave

You might try this for the insulator:

www.homedepot.com/p/The-Hillman-Group-0-250-x-3-8-SQ-Nylon-Anchor-Nut-881189/202242466

Any good hardware store can take that description and find it.

as much as that seems to be a problem area it seems to be a much better set up then what came off the assembly line, anyone else have any thoughts on that?

I found all the parts and bought them for mine Dave.
I couldn't find them all at one place when looking online only.
Maybe I would have if I had taken the time to pick up the phone.
Until I found them all, I ran it straight wired as JMOR shows.
Less connections but more physical stress pulling on the points.
I didn't run it too long and it seems no worse for wear.

Not sure about the "fix it correctly" theory. Seems to me everytime I fix something on my 8n, no matter how good a job I do of it, 50 years and it needs doing all over again.
