inspecting 8n starter

going to get the starter out completely today, soundguy, you say to inspect the drive gear and ring gear, i'm newby messing with starters, are there any existing pics that show which is which? i know to look for warn teeth, now i say the starter was stuck and i couldn't rock it out, even though it sounded like it was stuck(i have another 8n that sounds like that and i can put it in gear and rock it out) it may not be stuck, what are the other possibilities? if so what and how do i check for the other possibilities?

thanks again for all the help
dave

Be carefull after you loosen the starter bolts. The starter is in three pieces. You have to wiggle it around so as to clear the ring gear and then turn it slightly in to clear the bell housing. When you get it out you need to put two nuts on the starter bolts so that it does not come apart on you. With the starter out you can bar the flywheel over with a screw driver and look at the ring gear. Put a chalk mark on the tooth where you start. You might also check John Smith's site for a tutorial on the subject. He is very good.

got the above done, however can't get starter back in, it's almost where it needs to be but can't seem to get it the last half inch, need advice on this one, been wrestling around with the starter for an hour

As you guide it in, crowd it toward the 1:30 to 2:00 o'clock position, jiggling it past the ring gear. As soon as it is in , get one of those starter blots in thumb tight and take a breather, then do the last one

I find it helps to use a head light so you can see the starter drive (bendix) go past the flywheel. Be patient - it came out it will go back in.

here is the starter, everything look good here?

I'm on a phone, so you will have to decide if the teeth are sharp and long and full length or worn down, same with ring gear.

Since the drive I in engaged position, that last half inch is actually the gear mesh, try turning shaft a bit to get teeth to mesh, otherwise jiggling and loud cursing with lots of sweating usually gets the job done.

 when I tried to put my starter back on the 2N after getting it rebuilt it took a few chosen words, some sweat , and a couple of beer breaks before I got it back in place.
