Dearborn Front Snow Plow

Hey everyone,

Recently purchased a 53' Ford NAA "Golden Jubilee". As luck would have it, the same week I found a Dearborn front snowplow and purchased that as well. I'm in snow country (Northwestern MI to be exact) and was wondering how to rig this plow up as its been converted to the hydraulic lift. I've heard of something called a "Selec-trol Valve" but I don't believe I have one. Any input, pictures and advice is welcome as info and second hand experience using this plow is hard to find around the Internet. Thanks in advance!

Try to do a search on this board and the ford board. Plenty of good snowplow info on this site.
Convert to hyd lift. Any photos might help. Did The dearborn plow come with a 19-1 universal dearborn frame? ARPS frame? later hundred series
19-80 frame.
They made a couple different style selec-trol valves. One had a knob the other had a lever. They are not that easy to find and not cheap when
you do find them. You can use your existing plate My email is open I can send you a link for this. You will devert the hyd fluid so you will
have to chain down your 3pt arms.

Welcome to the YT Forums. This site is an
amazing collection of people from all walks
of life who know EVERYTHING about those old
Fords.
They made those plows with either cable lift
or hydraulic lift. If yours is currently hyd
lift I would do as Kirk suggests and find
the right valve for it. It won't be easy to
find one and they are expensive when you do
but will be easier to find than the parts
needed to make it cable lift.
I would watch Craigslist, Ebay and this site
to find one. Or run a free wanted ad in the
classifieds here.
You will need tire chains and rear ballast -
either fluid in your tires or wheel weights
- too. But properly set up your tractor will
make an awesome little snow mover.

If you are not looking for originality the easiest solution to the control valve issue is to purchase a generic valve and plumb it into the pressure circuit on the tractor.

My mind goes back to something a member here
posted years ago for a front blade on an 8N (I
think). It was pretty ingenious. They had a one way
cylinder mounted on the blade and a long hydraulic
hose. At the back of the tractor was another one
way cylinder hooked to the same hose. That system
was filled so that one cylinder was extended and
the other retracted. It had no air pockets.

They took the back cylinder and mounted it so that
one end was pinned to the top link. The other end
was fixed to the three point drawbar. When the
three point was lifted it shortened that cylinder, the
fluid ran through the hose, and extended the other
cylinder raising the snow plow. It was heavy enough
that gravity pushed the fluid back through when the
lift was lowered. When you take the plow off you
just take the back cylinder off and leave the system
with the plow. It was pretty cool.

summer,
I thought of you yesterday as I was working out in my truck patch, temperature was around 95 degrees,

you were working on your snow plow, but I guess now is the time to work on snow plows, not when the snow is two feet deep,

be sure to post a picture when the project is finished, not many snow plows on small tractors down here in west ky,

most of us just use a rear blade or box blade, but we are not normally dealing with near as much snow as you guys have,

You guys wouldn't believe how long I tried to work at uploading these pictures. Also, thanks for all the info. I'm really trying to find some sort of valve to install BC I hate to take a chance going down the dark road of fabricating/modifications when I know darn well I'd probably screw it up haha

The snowplow you have has the 19-80 frame. I was available with a cable system (as shown on my light industrial) and the hydraulic system that
you have. I also have the hydraulic one too. The hyd system had up and down pressure. The selectrol valve only supplied up pressure and gravity
down. If using this valve you would probably have to plug/vent the top of the cylinder.Mine is used on a later model than the NAA and uses the
standard two hose valve. I sure other guys can tell you how the rig up your system to work.
BTW. I was on my 4000 today knocking down brush, switched from my snowplow to my dozer blade

Thanks for the great info! I'd love to know the best way to rig my plow up to my NAA. As for the cylinder, are they rebuild able? In another note, I wish I had the dozer too. Clearly someone used my snow plow as a dozer at some point based on the damage it looks to have. Is it a special color of paint, or just the standard Vermillion Red? Thanks!!

.

Also, maybe the mod mentioned above would work for up and down pressure? Just worry about messing something irreplaceable up. Also anyone know where to get some tire chains? My rears are loaded but I'm sure I'll need chains...

This is not rocket science:
  • [*:1114db5628]Purchase an open center control valve - as many SA/DA spools as you think you will want. [*:1114db5628]Mount the control valve some place convenient to the operator station[*:1114db5628]Cut a short (6") section of the steel pressure line out just below where it attaches to the pump. [*:1114db5628]Install two hydraulic tube fittings on the cutoff ends and run hydraulic 3/8" hydraulic hoses from those fittings to your control valve.[/list:eek::1114db5628] You now have SA/DA remotes that will run your plow or anything else you might care to acquire ;-)

PS> If you want to do it right the valve should have a pressure beyond option and you would run the return from the valve to the filler on the hydraulic sump. This one would give you one set of DA remotes - click on the image to go to the site that sells it:

TOH,

I realize this isn't rocket science. That said, at the risk of sounding like an idiot, I don't suppose you have pictures of a set up like your talking?

No pictures of that exact setup. But here is one showing both lines cut and reconnected for a modern pump. It is EASY to cut the line and install a control valve in the circuit. Call me or email if you want help.

TOH,

Thank you, I'll probably take you up on that. I figure that project to start late August or September atleast as of now. Thanks!
