OT...gear box lube

I've got a three point spreader that has a leaking gear box shaft seal. Can't find the replacement seal part number (Sitrex spreader made in Italy).
Got me to wondering if I used corn head grease instead of 90w if that would slow the leak down or would the corn head grease liquify in the gear box. Anybody try CH grease in a PTO driven gear box? Dan

corn head grease is a top rated product.
it works fine in a gearbox that has a slow leak,

I would try it first, but if your leak is so bad, it leaks out,
remember there are many gearbox's running out there and have been for years, just pumped full of regular axle/bearing grease.

grease in a gearbox is much better than letting it run dry of oil, ruined for sure,.

Of course, any lube is better than no lube but the use of chassis lube or wheel bearing grease is not recommended in gearboxes beyond short term emergency usage.

Such lubricants do not contain the EP additives that protect the hardened surfaces on gears. Such usage will result in rapid wearing of the gears and subsequent failure.

Dean... does EP mean extreme pressure? If so, John Deere's corn head grease says it has that additive. It also says it's for slow moving gear boxes, which this is not. This is a seldom used piece of equipment and I was just being lazy, from the parts diagram it looks like I would have to split the gear box case to remove the shaft and gain access to the seal. I'm sure I could match the seal but would most likely have to make a new gasket. I hate leaks but might have to live with this one and just keep an eye on it. Dan

of course you are correct,

but many times on an old beat-up shredder, the reason the oil seal when out is because the shaft and gears are worn,
installing a new seal will only last a short time and it will be leaking again,

I just thought if its an old shredder and he wanted to get by for a while longer, he might try this temporary fix.

might last a season or two, until he can find a new shredder or have the gearbox rebuilt.

Certainly not a long time, life time fix,

I just assumed it was an old shredder as he could not find parts for it.

Yes. EP means extreme pressure.

I recommend CNH Pourable High EP Oil for leaking gearboxes. It will stay in boxes where 90W will not but it is less thick than Cornhead grease.

beeen trying to remember what the product was, but if you have a gravel quarry near, you might visit and talk to a mechanic, we used a thick but pour able, [ in warm weather] gear lube in the old rock crusher primary cone gear box when i worked at the gravel plant, also started using that in the secondary cone, this stuff was about like trying to pour the old stp oil treatment stuff on a cold day ,the vibration off those machines is incredible, and regular grease or oil wont stay in the gear boxes,
