I am back again with my 8n just backfiring. I was previously having a difficult time getting the timing correct but finally got it but the carb was shot. So after purchasing a new carb getting it set the factory settings from the manual it will only back fire again. Any ideas on where to start?

Has it been tuned up
start with the basics
Points, plugs, wires
cap, rotor.
I have found point gap is really important.
must be set just right.

Stay away from Champion plugs
use NGK or Autolite.
h yeah bro! The brand name on a plug dictates backfire or no backfire!!!!!!!!!

when i got the tractor it had been sitting for 6 years. did a complete tune up new wires plugs (autolite) cap points rotor and coil. was running fine until i parked it for a few days to get a carb and because harvest started.

tmcguire,

Keep in mind that if your backfiring is relative to points and/or timing, that backfiring through the carb is an indication of it being "too advanced" an explosion (intake valve not completely closed).

Backfiring through the [b:5b90f9dd02]exhaust [/b:5b90f9dd02]is an indication of the timing being "too retarded" (exhaust valve already starting to open at the time of the explosion).

Back firing thru an exhaust valve?

ok I will check again I believe it is backfiring out the exhaust. What I don't understand is that it was running fine aside from the carb needed rebuilt so why would the timing be off now?

You mentioned the tractor had been sitting. You said you really haven't changed anything. A sticking exhaust valve would be something to consider. It could have been fine when you first started running it after sitting for so long but then maybe the new fuel starts dissolving some gunk and turns it into valve stem glue.
