momentary increase of power

ok so the old jube has 31 hp on a good day, and the old N has 26, its most used application is as a mower, now supose just for 15 seconds or so at a time, to get thru the heavy stuff you need 4o + hp not all the time, just momentary, nos? other ideas?

(2nd time posting. First response disappeared.)

I would take a smaller bite either in depth or width of cut before I'd start trying to extract more power from these tired old engines than they were ever designed to make.

NOS...lol...nice. post pics
seriously....good shape engine...governor has the throttle plate opened all the way...losing rpm's...that's all there is. push it further and the engine will come apart.
park it and fire up the 800....hint :)

like Marty said,
...raise your mower or take smaller bites..
I finish mow my side yard with a Super H.(heavy grass and dense clover) Springtime...first gear..half passes...boring, and takes forever...but it is what it is.

get an 8xx or take a smaller bite.. that's the proper thing once she lugs. ( lug = adding more throttle does not increase rpm or decrease rpm loss )

I thought if I just had 5 or 10 more horsepower on my 8n all would be well . Now I have a 3 cylinder diesel at 45 HP and I still lug it down , of course I cover a lot more ground quicker .

It would be better to lug a motor than to bust the drivetrain . 15 seconds would just make you want 60 seconds which would make you want .....

Inject some nitrous oxide in it :)
Seriousy though, like Ken says, it doesn't matter how many hp you have there's always those few moments when you need a few more.

It isn't healthy to lug a motor but I'm curious what is actually damaged by it as long as it's not pinging when lugged down. Never have I seen an engine failure from lugging

1941 Ford pick up with 9N engine made 40 HP at flywheel.
You just need to up the RPMS when you anticipate the tough going.
Let us know how it turns out.

I've seen a 5000 with a turbo and jucied fuel screw get lugged down and turn a crank into a piece of yarn..

Downshift? Swing out to cut a narrower swath? Raise the mower a bit? Trade for a bigger tractor? Mow earlier when the grass is shorter?

My 8n had a Sherman combo . In overdrive it would spin the mower really really fast , lol .More rpm would increase the power output but explode the mower .

If it is lugging down at wide open throttle there is no more rpm to get . I guess it would work on a 15 second kamikaze attack

Stress / metal fatigue , premature bearing wear , maximum compression , minimal oil pressure and you get a rod through the side of a block ? Kind of like a heart attack , it would be a combination of extremes working against you .

More like about 40 hp Ken - depending on
which transmission was in it. Most efficient
was the 4 speed, followed by the 8 speed.
Worst tranny for parasitic loss is the SOS.
I still figure them at about 38/39. About
half way between a Jube or 600 and an 801.
Mark, I always thought it was a
factor/function of oil pressure.
If you have good OP I doubt lugging it hurts
it much. But if you have poor OP and you are
lugging it hard you stand a chance of
spinning a rod bearing.
Nebraska test

I could not remember the rated HP numbers , 47 motor 38 PTO , but I did add fresh blue paint so that added a few HP . If I could have afforded the chrome muffler tip it would have pushed it over 50 hp for sure .

just have to make 2 passes when needed i guess, i have a bigger tractor, but this mowing customer, a 30 year long customer is 40 miles away, while running 40 miles is just across the street out here, i dont feel like trying to make a 80 mile round trip with the big tractor, which tips the scale around 12000 lbs just to mow 10 acres,
