Going to Look at a supposed '39 this weekend!

I finally found something that from pictures has most of the features of the 1939 9N. I'm making the trip this weekend to go check it out! Wish me luck. They're trying to get to storage before hand to get the serial number for me but it has so many of the early features I'm probably still interested if it turns out to be a 1940 or 1941. Picture show the correct grill, radius arms, large diameter front wheels, the tires look correct when I compare them to the Dennis Carpenter catalog and it's all gray. The rear axles are riveted though and I can't see the fender mount casting boss. It has thew 3 spoke wheel. I don't know why the 4 spoke always seems to get replaced when you can get aftermarket 4 spokes.

The 3 spoke were more common, and remember before the internet well what the local dealer had was what was available. Nowadays a quick Google search and you can find a 4 spoke. But back then the parts guy usually said nope that's all I can get so you made it work!

Here's one that I was sent.

They found the serial number. It's apparently a late 1940, not a 1939. I'd like to have a genuine '39 but if it's condition is as good in person as it appears in pictures, 1940 is close enough for me. I'm still interested and going to check it out tomorrow.

Nice looking 9n. I would leave the guard on the fragile aluminum grill. I would flip the guard over so it's not upside down.

So, I went and looked at the 9N. I confirmed the serial number to make it a late 1940. The seller still doesn't believe it's not a 1939 but he
seems a nice guy so no sense trying to start a fight. Turns out in addition to all of the other correct features, it does have the 4 spoke steering
wheel. I bought it!

As for not seeing any work, of course it will. I'll try to keep it clean but thankfully the paint is nowhere near perfect and it's not a '39 so I'll have
no problem pulling a finish mower with it on nice dry fields now and then. I was concerned it might be too nice to actually use and it is darn,
darn close but the current owner pulls a grader place with it so it's not like I'm taking a museum restoration outside for the first time.
