I am converting from an older engine with from mount dist to a
newer wie side, new one didn't come with a governor so I'm using
the one from original engine, issue I'd this. Original engine had
an oil return line out the bottom of the filter and into the
block, new one used one going into the governor! Where would I
hook up the oil return line on this newer engine? Or do I just do
away with the filter? Loop it to a T where the oil comes out and goes to the gauge? Or am I up the creek? Thanks

Jim,Hook the oil line from the bottom of the filter up to the governor,as that was an improvement from the earlier years to help lube the governor.Just plug the hole in the block under the oil filter.1/8"npt plug.

Are you sure there is not a plug in the housing where the hole is in the picture?

I would find a used governor and install the oil line.

... and sell the '39 early model governor for more than you pay for a common governor , same with the block .

What is the serial number on the block ? you may have a lot of valuable parts .

The block is junk, the oil pan is junk, all been welded, not my
tractor, belongs to a customer. I'm going to see if there is a
plug in the governor tomorrow
