8n lost oil pressure

Posting for a friend-8N, serial no.8n456706. Lost oil press when he stalled it while brush hog running and he accidently backed into water at edge of pond and tractor stalled. I don't believe he had overrunning clutch on hog. When he restarted it, had no oil press on gauge on dash. I loaned him master oil press gauge from our garage and he has no oil pressure cranking. From what I read on other sites, you can prime pump, thru pressure relief valve fitting on engine front cover, he said he tried that with 10w30 oil and no luck. When cover removed from oil filter had only about three inches of oil in bottom, when he first checked problem. There also has been a very slight leak of oil between casing and oil pump over past couple of years that he said he saw after he parked tractor after mowing. He said oil was down about 1/2 quart after sitting idle over winter. Could stalling brush hog out cause pump to fail due to lack of over run clutch or is this just coincidence that now no oil press? What is best route to follow from here? Thx

lack of overrunning clutch has nothing to do with his oil pressure problem. I would remove drain plug in pan and see if the pickup tube has come loose. It can and does happen.

Crack the drain plug on the oil pan? Oil floats. Water sinks. If there's water in the oil pan, it may be trying to lube the engine with water, and being very thin, not able to build up any pressure. Oil is sucked from the bottom (water side) of a water contaminated pan.

Boltz,Well he could try priming at the oil pressure relief again, remove the plug, spring and plunger and use some 90 weight in a ketchup squeeze bottle.Get all you can in there and quickly replace plunger, spring and plug.Start it and watch oil pressure gauge,no pressure shut it off right away!Or prime it through the oil pressure line removed from the gauge with oil in a pump up sprayer hooked to the line to prime the oil pump.If it still has no oil pressure the oil pickup tube could be broken off.Drain the oil and reach up in the drain hole and see if you can wiggle the pickup bell to see if it is loose. If it is loose ,time to drop the oil pan .

I agree with R Geiger. Check the pickup tube in the oil pan.
You should be able to feel it if you take the ug out.
When he gets it figured out tell him he needs to look for the very rare and much sought after Dearborn pontoon kit if he wants to use it in the lake.
The propeller is powered by the pto and twin rudders work off the steering arms.

Thx for fast response. You guys are good...... Forgot to mention that we already checked pickup tube and was ok. Never got tractor in water, just hog Will try 90wt again tonite and cross fingers. If he gets hog blades going fast enough maybe will work like an air cushion vehicle on pond/ lol Boltz

i lost prime in my pump from a recent rebuild. someone on here mentioned to use a healthy amount - like five ounces. worked on the first try.

I prime my oil pumps the easy way . Take out the drain plug / screen , slip a 4' long piece of 1/2" rubber hose over the end of the pick up tube , attach a large funnel to the other end . with a catch pan under the drain , fill the funnel with oil while holding it higher than the motor and start it at idle . It does not pump much volume at idle , maybe a quart in ten seconds so you really don't need to panic about it starving for oil . when the oil pressure builds up shut it off and finish the oil change .

You can probably use a small vacuum line hose and get it in the pressure relief valve fitting without too much difficulty . it is just harder for me to keep from dropping those small parts .

Well, stopped raining so owner tried your suggestion of squeeze bottle and heavy oil(90wt) and also installed a new copper copper O ring (was a cardboard/paper style O ring) when he first pulled out plug on bolt that covers relief valve threaded hole. Son of a gun, it worked, good oil pressure again. YES!!! OK, so why did it loose prime when it stalled? That has never happened before. Was it because of bad O ring on plug? Trying to wrap my head around the lost oil pressure when it stalled. He has since used the brush hog 2 or three times for short periods, turned tractor off and restarted and every time so far has been ok. That was why I questioned that if tractor was forced to stall from hog stalling engine that damage might occur to oil pump when tractor motor was forced to quit mechanically damaging gears in pump because of the power flow through trans, clutch, crankshaft to pump gear? From the little reading that I have done about over running clutch I would assume that severe damage potentially could occur when implement tries to drive tractor not to mention the safety aspect. Do I understand this correctly? Anyway thank you all for your comments. Machine is up and working. The man who I posted this for does not have internet and said thank you for your help. What an awesome forum. Hope you all have a good weekend. boltz
