do you have to use the big ugly starter button on the 9N? because you need to hook it to the huge battery cables or can you use a small starter button? with like a 10 gauge wire.........Is it an amp thing?

unny

Yes it's an "amp thing". That starter button connects the battery to the starter. Newer tractors replaced that big switch with a solenoid and could then use a smaller, lighter duty switch that could be incorporated into the key switch as all the switch needed to do was energize the solenoid that switched the high current.

You can put a starter button on it but it really is a safety device as jmor stated. I have a 900 ford with a starter button. like that when I bought it 15 years ago. Some times you may try to start a tractor while your on the ground for what ever reason. My 8n is no problem as it will not start with it in gear. My 900 I have to be extra careful as it will start in gear. Just ones preference.

Much simpler to stay with the original system.

If your tractor doesn't crank over well. You most likely need
three new heavy battery cables and a new starter switch.

Do not buy those light duty 4 gauge cables for a six volt system.

good grief.. I'd have just told him.. yeah.. use a toggle switch and the 10g wire and then let him deal with the problems... hope that was a late april fools question...

sound guy you have been around along time here. have you heard of anyone installing a selenoid to change starter switches. the reason I wanted to change mine out is because I'm customizing a 9N that I bought from famed "kelly Johnson's step son that was owned by Kelly and I'm tricking it out painting it silver drive train and flat black fenders and hood etc etc and calling it the "Blackbird" in memory of Kelly. and the starter switch is on the dash plate and looks big and ugly next to my new gauges etc.

I've heard of and seen people do lots of things.

It's your machine, do whatever you want with it.

LOL........put the old one back on........just have to paint it or put a rubber cap on it or something

I'd leave the starter switch on the plate and add a nicely made tag that says "Eject" or maybe redesign the button to look something like this:

Post a photo when you are done.

Bonus points if you install Chaff & Flare Dispenser on each side of the tractor. Very impressive when there is a "fly-by demonstration" and the pilot shoots them off! Something you will never forget if every you were to see it. I saw one of the first F14 Tomcats at Miramar do a slow pass and fired off his chaff at one second intervals. Made a lot of noise and the sight of that big fighter sliding through the sky several hundred feet off the ground... very impressive. You may have to get a license to fire off the chaff, but you will certainly get lots of invitations at tractor meets if you get it going.
