Update: N let me down

I put the electronic ignition kit in it today. Fired right up.

When I installed the points I was in a rush. I didn't notice that the Standard brand points didn't match up. Only about 1/2 the surface was making contact. Now I don't have to worry about poor workmanship or materials as I no longer have points to mess with. I also now don't have to mess with that front mount dizzy!

Huh? There is a solid state replacement for all of that bullcrap between the front of the engine and the fan? It's reliable?

Tell me more. How expensive?

Lots of posts on this subject. Some people love it. Other bad mouth it and can't understand why you would want to waste your
money on it. This site sells the kits. Most agree that it works better on a tractor already converted to 12 volts.

Yea, there is a replacement. It uses the same distributor but converts it to electronic ignition. Both of my N's have been converted, on 3 years ago. I have the kit to do my Farmall M too. In my experience it's reliable and it eliminates having to mess with that front mount dizzy. Another factor that's coming into play is quality of points. Echlin, Bluestreak and Standard have been the recommended brands for quality points. Well the Standard brand points I bought 2 months ago really show that their quality has taken a nose dive. Bad part of it is Standard makes Bluestreak and Echlin points. I've been told they are all made in the land of almost right now.

To my understanding the 6 volt EI is very voltage sensitive as opposed to the 12 volt system.

While I like my N's I can honestly say that Ford DID NOT always have a better idea. Hanging onto the flathead engine as long as they did wasn't a great idea and the front mount dizzy was even worse. I'll find out later this week but one of the N's is going away, it's replacement looks like it will be a 600 series Ford.

12V EI from this site is about 85 bucks plus shipping.

(quoted from post at 07:16:26 06/01/16) yup.. I've seen more than a few breakers that didn't strike square.

Kinda makes me mad. The worst part is that I rushed when putting them in and should have noticed it.

se i bought from napa for my farmall H were striking only 50%. I tweaked them with needle nose to align them up / down, but it shortened them, so overlap at ends was reduced to about 90%. no win..
