It is retained in place by a nut (with lockwasher) on the underside of the transmission cover.

There are some things to look out for when removing the top cover, I don't have time to go into full details right now, but a search of the archives should turn up numerous tutorials on the subject.
 
The main thing to look for when removing the cover is that
you don't let the detent spring come flying out. It's under the
little tab at the back of the cover near the center.

You will need a new gasket to put the cover back on with.
I put them on dry and they seal fine.
But a used one will leak every time in my experience.

There's a small steel ball under there too, if I am remembering the right thing? I had to find mine as it fell out when I removed the cover and had to ask which hole the ball went back into.
