Points on 1950 8N front mount

old caprine

I am trying to install new points on my 1950 8N front mount. The adjusting screw will only open the points to a tight .015, but when I tighten the hold down screws they close to around .010. These are BWD M15225 A41 made in Mexico and bought at Orielly. Are these the wrong points,Do I need to try another brand?
Thanks

I use Bluestreak or Echoing.

But......

If you have bushing wear, you'll never get
the gap set correctly. With new bushings and
Bluestreak points, I can open the gap to
030.

Do you have any sideways movement in the
shaft at all?

I have slight side movement when the shaft is held all the way to the top. It was running fine before, but getting hard to start. They had been in there 6 or more years. I think I may try another brand.

It looks like Bruce has you on the right
path for getting your points fixed.
I just wanted to give you a thumbs up on
your screen name.
From one old goat to another.

" I have slight side movement when the shaft is held all the way to the top."

Don't you think that might be a problem?

Maybe a quality set of points and setting the timing will work.

But I wouldn't bet on it.

Agree with Bruce, but if I already had those points, I would try enlarging the holes so I could get the proper gap.

Yes.
Feline, canine, equine, bovine, porcine, ovine, vulpine, corvine and cervine are a few I can think of.
And last but not least caprine :)

Thanks for everyone's help. I had this handle before but have not logged on for several years and I guess they dropped me. I still read the posts, but have not had any problems with my 8N that required advice.
