I bought a new water pump Ford 8N, I took the old one off and put the new one on and the studs are to short to get the nuts to thread on, so the old pump had no gasket material just blue rtv sealant, so should I install the new one the same way? and what does that spacer plate do ? if I got rid of that I might have room for sealant and the gaskets and also just wondering, I had noticed that on the new pump the bolt flanges are thicker than the one that I am replacing, so just thinking that if someone is going to make an aftermarket part for a tractor that is 60 years old then wouldn't they make it to the same specs as the original? I bought my part from a ford tractor dealer

So because the last guy made a bad repair you want to follow?

Use a gasket, and some sealer if you must, but not rtv.

Longer studs or bolts

I?ve been working on old cars, trucks & tractors now for over 50 years. Whenever possible, I get OEM component parts rebuilt. Given the high probability that any new component part purchased for an N tractor is made somewhere overseas w/o adequate quality control, chances are very good that you will be disappointed. And that's what just happened to you.

So.......

Get your old pump rebuilt, get a correct new pump or replace the studs.

And, as soundguy said, it doesn't make much sense to install it wrong again.

The pump won't pump with out the spacer plate... You are gonna have to get longer studs are bolts deal with it and move on... I have not ran into a pump like that but its just a little bump in the road

I have installed hundreds of water pumps if not a thousand are more... I glue the gasket to the pump with 3M 8001 gorilla snot and put a light coat of RTV on the other side of the gasket life is good... Just have all your ducks in a row and be ready to bolt it up...

Some folks don't like RTV I can tell ya in the right hands its some good chit...

I had to do the same with longer studs. If you go by advance auto or autozone, there is a tool in the tool section that attaches to the stud that's in the head and then use a ratchet or air hammer and it will take it out slick as snot. I think it was like $15-$20. I have used it several times on other projects so it is worthwhile. :D

Bingo, Bruce.

I had the same problem when I replaced the water pump on my 51 several years ago.

The bolt ears on the Chinese made aftermarket pumps are thicker than those on the OEM pumps, requiring one to replace the studs in the block.

I was fortunate enough to find one of the last remaining rebuilt pumps at NAPA.

All that is needed is longer studs. Use both the gasket and the RTV.

Longer studs can be gotten at most autoparts store (the O'Reilly near me had them in stock). A stud puller makes it easier. The one I used looks like this. There are other types.

i just replaced mine and ran into the short stud problem also . i went to napa and they have what they call water pump stud kit .it worked good .
