Started getting misfires and irregular popping out exhaust.Removed Dist.cap to see groves cut in terminals inside cap apparently from rotor button. one broke right off. A fix for this sloppy distributor or could it still function with a electronic conversion?

n EI module will not have any impact/influence of cap to rotor interference. Some had dust shield & those raised distributor cap by some distance. Probably used a different distributor cap if did not use dist shield. Could be a bushing problem allowing side to side movement.
 
Suggest that you check rotor shaft without rotor, most likely you have a well worn bushing which allows the shaft way too much movement. The worn bushing can be pressed out and another turned, pressed in, and reamed to fit the rotor shaft.
 
Do you have the clip that goes on before the rotor does? I have a dust cover on mine and have no problems with normal cap and rotors.
