Just pulled the shafts getting ready to drop the pump. I had fluid leaking from around the PTO shaft. All I would need to replace is the seal (D8NN703AA)correct? Should the retainer just pull back of the shafts? It seems really tight.

I just changed a seal on a 48 8n and all I had were retaining clips . If I would have know it was that easy I would have done it years ago . Seems the new seals have the lip in a slightly different location which meant no groove to ride in A+

Check the collar on the shaft. If it is grooved it won't seal well or long. $5 more for a new collar and their job is done right.

Taking the pto shaft assy apart is uber easy. Do it right and let the next guy worry about it in another 50 years

I hope that's still me....or my son. I'm the fourth generation of the family to have this tractor. I hope it makes it to the fifth or more.

I got the seal(D9NN703BB) now it's time to ask the repeating question. Which way does it go. I know I've read white part facing out. Help a color blind guy out, which side is white? There's a side that that metal is more rounded and darker I'm assuming that's the side that goes in? Also to reinstall I could just slide it up to the bearing and tap the housing in place? And should there be a c clip on the end of the housing to keep the seal from going too far?

I don't remember any marks . Look at the lip on the seal , you want to keep the oil in . I remember tapping mine in until it stopped and then reinstalling the retaining clip .
