9n wont stay running

disc

New User
Hello, I'm new on here and have been reading up on this problem but have not found a
solution.
I have a 9n with a 12 volt conversion and Pertronics electronic ignition. The
conversions are new. I had no spark and my wiring was cracking so I figured I would
upgrade. Problem is it won't run after I let off the start switch, it immediately shuts
off. I have run the red wire from the Pertronics module straight to the positive post
and the coil wire straight to the positive post. Front mount distributor. I installed
a solenoid and connected the starter through that. 1 wire from start position on the
solenoid to the positive terminal and it fires up just to shut down when I remove the
starting wire. Any ideas?

Sounds like you have the coil wired to the solenoid so the engine has to be cracking to make the coil hot.

that was installed to bypass anything on the tractor that might be shorting out. I will
go back to the start switch but it did the same thing with the original

have the coil wire straight to the battery positive post
have the pertronics red wire straight to positive post

shouldn't that bypass everything else?

So, recap.

Wire to coo an ei go straight to battery hot when testing?

How do you have starter and start switch wired.. Be exact.

battery cable to left side of solenoid.
starter cable to right side of solenoid
jumper wire to "s" terminal on solenoid
touch jumper to hot and motor turns over, fires up, shut off when jumper wire is removed from hot.
with the coil and ei straight to hot, shouldnt it stay running?

ok - battery is reconnected to the original neutral start button on the tractor. still only runs while the starter is engaged. the power wire for the ballast resister is running from the battery side of the neutral start safety switch. I have 12 volts on the coil and 12 volts on the ei unit. could something be shorting anywhere or creating an open circuit, that you know of to cause the tractor to shut off instead of stay running. I show 12 volts with tractor running or sitting with the switch on.

i guess it's off to the shop. I have checked , double checked, and all out started over several times. same result no matter what I try. Thanks to all that offered help.
