Ford 8n lift does work correctly in position control

Howdy everyone I'm new to this forum and I have some questions about my 1949 8n. After rescuing this very original mint tractor from its 30 plus years resting in a barn I got it running when i first engaged the pto the lift went all the way up as did the control lever with it and hung I couldn't push the control lever down and it took 3 days for the lift to bleed off. After dealing the oil and filling the case with diesel I ran the lift arms under my 3/4 ton Chevy pickup and lifted it off the ground. After that the control lever would move so I pushed down slowly nothing happens I the again raised it and pushed down hard and fast the arms and truck dropped. After several times doing this the lift began working great in the draft control position but the position control refuses to work correctly as soon as I flip the position lever it jumps to 1/3 travel off the ground and then just moving the control lever 1 inch the lift goes to full top and then drifts down about 3 inches and stops. I can push the control lever down and it will go nearly all the way to its lowest position but within 2 minutes it will raise back to the 1/3 travel position. I have no position control it doesn't stop anywhere in between its all the way up or 1/3 away from bottom. Did replace the fliud with 303 transdraulic. Any answeres would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks James

Have you removed the side cover yet to peek inside to see what's going on in there? If I were to guess I would say the control valve is stuck in. I say this because mine is doing the same thing. When it raised up and didn't lower and you couldn't move the touch lever tells me both valves were stuck. You have the exhaust valve to free up which is why it now lowers and the touch lever now moves freely. Many here have posted great tips that helped me, I'll look and copy them here for you.

Thanks for the reply but yea I've had the side plate off nothing seemed out of the ordinary I can grab the control rod tho and move it and the arms will drop to full down position but when I let go the control rod springs back to its position and so do the lift arms. I have tried adjusting this with the four bolts on the quadrant but the lift either becomes unresponsive or the lift arms move up to 1/2 half travel. As I said I don't understand what makes it work perfect when the position lever is switched to draft control but when it is switched to position control it does not work at all it is full up or down I am thinking of pulling the pump to see what's going on with it

update: lift is nearly right after removing the top cover and straightening the pump control rod and position control rod. It will raise and lower fine now but does not set at given position unless you raise the quadrant and then push down 1/2 an inch on the quadrant at this point it will stop stay put
