What the heck is this cable?

Im installing a new clutch in my 9N. I have had this tractor for a few years but don't know too much about it. There is this cable sticking out of the dash, I don't know what its for and didn't know what its hooked to, until I split the tractor for the new clutch. Is this a 2 speed gear box? The cable doesn't turn or push-pull that I know of. The knob or lever or whatever is supposed to be on it, is missing. Anybody know what this is, what it does and how to use it? Thanks!!

No pic, but probably an early Sherman overdrive.

Looks like a Sherman overdrive add on transmission. If the cables won't move it probably needs a bit of work. John Smith has put a ton of good info together on them.

Wow, that's it alright. very cool. I got it soaking in PB blaster so hopefully it will free up and I can use it. Thanks so much for the info...

IMAMAC........take yer RUSTED cable into a trucker repair shop and gitta NEW waterproof armored cable built. Its NOT expensive but will save you much knashing of teeth and ferrin' language.......HTH, the amazed Dell
