1940 9N Aluminum Radiator Cap

Hello all,

I am in the process of acquiring my grandfather's old 1940 Ford 9N. It has certainly seen better days, but I have fond memories of it from when I was a kid. I am looking to restore it and fortunately it has most of the parts. It was missing a carburetor which I found a TSX33 which I am rebuilding. One of item it's missing is the original 1940 aluminum radiator cap. I'm wondering if anyone out there might know where I can pick one up that is not aftermarket. Any help is appreciated.

No help on the cap other than to say that
judging by the condition of the tractor you
have plenty of time to find one.
Meanwhile you can use a cheap, modern one to
get you going.
I must admit I don't always see the value of
all these restorations but in your case I
can make an exception. That tractor has
value as a piece of family history and will
be very satisfying to drive again. Plus I
have to admit I do have a soft spot for
smooth axles on these things and yours does
have at least one that we can see.
Anyway, this is a very good board for
getting help on that tractor. Great bunch of
folks here. So welcome to the YT N board.
I hope you have fun with your project.
Oh, and paint it all gray like it's supposed
to be. Not redbelly like you see so many of
them.

I have been thru your process a few times. Those radiator caps come up from time to time on ebay. They are
non pressure systems so most of the radiator caps on the market will not work if you have the original large
tank top non pressure radiator. Dennis Carpenter sells a nice reproduction cap and they also sell the
underneath parts of the cap to refurbish one if you are lucky enough to find an original.

Here are more photos. I'm just trying to figure out if I'll need to replace to radiator. I haven't tested it out. If I do replace it, what is the best option as I've heard some of the aftermarket ones don't totally fit and needs some altering. If I go that route, I guess a original radiator cap doesn't matter. I've been able to jack up the rear and am able to turn the rear tires. The only item that seems to be in bad shape is the tool box, whose bottom has rusted out. So I feel good about this. And I do plan on painting it all gray as it should be, but I might shine up the aluminum dash.

good luck...take lots of pics now. When you are done, no one will believe it ever looked like it does now.
Don't let its looks scare you. It looks like most of the tractors I buy...mostly non-runners. A good day of doing this and that and I'm usually taking a careful 'check it out' test drive.

Don't rush the process or immediately start tearing it down to nuts and bolts.
You'd be surprised on how many tractors that look just like yours.....don't need much work at all mechanically.

Overall it looks pretty good. It is always fun restoring a family treasure. Are you able to find the serial number?

Yes, it's *N37930*
