Just picked up an 8n not sure of year. But I am thinking someone rewired it and here's the problem there is no switch to start it or to shut it off
when I asked the guy he said just pull the choke to stop it and disconnect the battery so it don't go dead. So looks like I need to rewire it so it
has a key. So is there a wire harrness I should buy on here?

Their are wiring harnesses available, depending on whether it
is a 6V or 12V system. You could also make your own if you like.
Google "wiring diagrams by JMOR".
He has made some really detailed, easy to follow pictograms
of about every combination you would need.

If you kit a harness. you need to know if the tractor is a side or front mount distributor. 8n's you can make your own just as easy as buying one.

or.. you just put a switch in the wire going to the coil....

PS.. if he always choked it to stop it, then it's cyl walls have seen lots of gas and less oil, and the oil may have always been thinned with gas.. so I'd look for excessive bearing, ring and cyl wear...

This site sells what you need, a lot easier and quicker than making your own IMO. If you have the tools and know what wire size to use, wire diagrams are on the web.

Kenny..........BIG CAUTION........there are 2-kinds of ignition systems used on the 4-speed 8N. The weird 4-nipple front mount with MANDATORY ballast resistor ...and... the 5-nipple side mount with round can ignition coil and NO ballast resistor. Many N-tractors are converted to 12-volts 'cuz the rumpa-rumpa of 6-volt starter motor is disconcerting to ears used to the whirr of their 12-volt Belchmobile. Surprizingly enuff, starter motor don't care positive (+) or negative (-) ground, still turns the same direction to start yer engine. .......HTH, Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister
