Any comments on the merits of using the neopreme washer instead of the leather washer on the new style NAA piston in the hysraulic system of an 8n?

I am following this thread . I am looking for a source for neoprene washers , all is see are leather .

Somebody once reported to take your old piston and cut the first ring groove to accept the NAA O-Ring and washer then keep the two last rings to push any debris out of the way .

I have 3 8n's torn down to the case on the rear end . 2 have chipped pinions and a lot of bad bearings . I pressure washed real good with the lift cover , pump , pto shaft , and axles removed . When I pulled the trumpets I found that the real good washing wasn't so good after all .

I did find that my 2" socket that I used on the axle nuts would fit over the yolks , which were all stuck . With a little oil , a hand held propane torch , and the hammering of the air impact , they only fought me for a few minutes but they all came off good , Now to try my luck on the arms and lift shafts .

See tip # 63; CNH has them. At least around here they do..........

Allow me to pick a nit - neoprene is not a good material for use in petroleum products and o-rings and backup rings used in hydraulic systems are commonly made of Buna-N (nitrile rubber). High pressure/extended life backup rings are commonly PTFE (Teflon)

The NAA piston uses an industry standard size o-ring/backup ring (AS-330) and they are easily found at any industrial supply house. If you are frugal you can get a bag of fifty -330 Buna-N backup rings from McMaster for $8.50. A bag of 10 PTFE backup rings will cost you $12.55. Buy in volume and share with friends ;-)

Case New Holland.

Readily available singly but many dealers will likely need to order.

Ah....Thanks Dean....I hadn't heard Case had joined up with New Holland....The Dealer in my area never changed his sign....The C through me!

Happened in or about 1999. Both companies were and still are owned by Fiat.

I have used the leather and the neoprene styles as well with satisfactory results from both. The back-up washer's meaning here is exactly that -it washes or more precisely, acts as a 'wiper' to ensure any debris in the cylinder gets pushed aside before the piston moves past. It isn't really a seal, the 'O'-Ring does that. I did my 8N with the leather washer and a neighbors 8N with the neoprene both within 2 weeks of each other and they both have lasted now for 5 years with no issues. CNH (Case New Holland) sells the neoprene washer, part number 87051231. It's just easier to order the new piston, O-Ring, and leather backup washer all together from one place.

A backup ring is exactly what the name says. It backs up the oring so the pressure does not push the o ring against the sharp edges. Used thousands of teflon ones in Helicopter parts.

That said I installed the old ring style 6 years ago and she is working just fine.

The rubber one is EZ to install

I had a leather backer upper break that event left a bad taste that did not settle well...
