Float charger question

Is it ok to connect a float charger to a battery where the negative cable is disconnected
from the battery but the pos. cable is still connected to the battery? Any way that this
connection I describe can damage the points if they happen to be closed when the tractor is
turned off???

If you disconnect either cable, no current will flow anywhere to the tractor.

Why not just leave the cables connected and make sure the ignition switch is turned off?

Thanks Bruce. I kept having battery drain and traced it back to the alternator..Alternator was working good so I opted to put a no tools needed disconnect on the negative cable..

Yes, but do not leave the float charger connected indefinitely as such will shorten the life of your battery.
