Help naming electrical part

Hi all, can someone please help me identify the electrical part in the attached picture so I can order one. It sits on the back side of the instrument panel. I have a 2N with 12v conversion.

" Why are you replacing it? "

Never mind.

Now that I'm on the desk top, I can see it's broke.

That means you've been running the tractor w/o the ballast resistor.

Any other resistors in the circuit?

See tip # 30; it's easier to use a 12 volt coil & the OEM ballast resistor than to try & figure out what additional resistance you need in the circuit.

Regardless of what choice you make about resistors, Google "wiring diagrams JMOR" and insure that the tractor is wired correctly. (tip # 42)

The resistor at the bottom must have come apart (see bottom of the cpmponent in the picture) while I had the instrunent panel off to replace one of the steering sector gears.

Tractor was running great until I had to replace the rt. steering sector gear after I hit a fence. Got it all back together and it wouldn't start. Traced it back to this resistor 5hat I must have accidentally broken. I bypassed it and it ran great but am I ruining my coil or alternator by doing that?

No other resistors that I know of except possibly an in-line resistor in one of the alternator wires (can't remember which). Seems like years ago I put that one in because current was back feeding into the system and I couldn't shut the tractor off with the ignition sw.

Kurt.........you ask will I HURT the coil or alternator by bypassing the infamous ballast resistor. Alternator or generator don't care and won't be hurt. ...BUT... the squarecan coil (whether 6-volt or modern 12-volt) needs the MANDATORY ballast resistor. NO ARGUE!!! Heres what will happen, with the ballast resistor bypassed, the coil will OVERHEAT and short out and you'll have weak sparkies. ...but... after about 4-hrs or overnite, the insulative TAR will solidify and yer coil will sparkle again ...until... the coil overheats and melts the insulative tar again. Modern round can oil cooled coils don't have that problem. ........HTH, the amazed Dell
