Ford 501 Mower Push Rod

I recently purchased a Ford 8N tractor and a Ford 501 sickle mower (from different sellers). In trying to attach the mower I discover the push rod has been severely bent so that it is too short to connect properly. I have taken the push rod to a machine shop to be straightened but that may not work. Are replacement push rod assemblies available anywhere? Also, what exactly is the function of the push rod?

Thanks,

Exactly what is a push rod on a mower? The only push rods that I know of are the ones that open the valves.

Are you talking about the arm that goes on the back pulley to the mower. that's suppose to a wooden pitman arm. Are you talking about the piece that bolts on the pitman arm. You may have to provide a photo. I have a 501 sickle mower but not sure what you are saying.

e is speaking of the "501 push rod".
I connects lower left of mower to a bracket clamped to the left tractor lift linkage/arm. I can't say more about "exact function" other than it is part of attachment linkage as are several other items and it is on my two 501 mowers and in manual as "push rod". Looks similar to automotive steering tie rod on ends.

JMOR is correct. The push rod I refer to is shown on Figure 4 - Break Back Assembly in the 501 Parts Manual. It is Part No. 148582 PUSHROD ASSEMBLY.

I am assuming it has some role in the mechanism that allows the cutter bar to swing backward if an obstruction is encountered.

I use a 501 with my 8n.
That clamp bar or push rod is to keep the mower from swinging back and forth.Mine kept falling off, I have good stays and chains and does not seem to be a problem.

I used it yesterday on my Case VAC that has rigid lift arms so it was not needed.
