ford 8n valves

You don't really need rotating exhaust valves. My 9n still has the old mushroom valves. I get along fine.

I guess you did not look at the parts sold by your hosts on this site. The rotating ones are more. For the hobby tractor runner the non rotating will last a long time.

(quoted from post at 20:31:29 05/10/16) I saw that when you order valves they are the updated version that are rotating valves what is the difference?
A rotating valve is designed so that when it is opening there is no pressure from the keeper to the valve stem , which may allow the valve to rotate . when closed the keeper applies pressure on the stem to hold the valve closed .

It is a slightly complicated set up with thight clearances that require machining to fit .

For medium to light duty they are not required . For heavy usage you would probably wear out your rings before you burnt a valve .

I recently burnt a valve but I attribute it to massive carbon build up that probably blocked the valve from closing tightly . The motor would use a quart of oil in about 5 gallons of gas . It usually ran in 1st gear wide open throttle and lugging down for 100 hrs a year with another 100 hrs in 2nd 3/4 throttle .

(quoted from post at 12:32:14 05/11/16) Thank you what would you recommend

Standard valves unless you have a buddy that works at a machine shop that is an N owner also . I would imagine that most modern machine shops with thier high overhead would either price the job high to adjust for time spent figuring out how to do an outdated procedure OR they may slop it together for a quick buck .

(quoted from post at 14:23:56 05/11/16) Standard valves are the ones that are on it now right?

Yes , 8ns came out stock with a standard valve and one piece solid guide . some of the earlier 9ns came out with mushroom headed valves and a two piece split guide . as old as these tractors are you could fine about anything . it is best to wait and order parts after you have disassembled everything . you could find that the last rebuild had all new valves and just rings , then the motor starts smoking and it is time for a rebuild , but it does not need valves .

I don't mine free rotating exhaust valves I charge well to set them up... If you are not capable don't go there if it has free rotat'N exh valves order STD non free rotat'N EXH valves with the springs, keepers and retainers.. The Keepers and retainers are no interchangeable from one to the other the springs are the same I would install new springs anyways...

Valves are the most overlooked part of a engine... If they do not seal 100% performance will suffer BADLY... I have never understood why folks gamble with them other than they know no better...
