PTO Slip Clutch

If I am going to mow using a finish mower that is belt driven do I need to have a slip clutch on my PTO shaft.

finish mowers generally do not have the rotary momentum that makes you want / need an ORC.

having one, if you already do, certaintly won't hurt anything, and will offer you a small benefit when clutching to brake or shift as it will decouple whatever momentum IS there .. not that it is usually much.

probably not, i have a new 6 footer, and when i stop, even though i have a over running clutch on the pto, the mower stops in seconds, it doesnt wind down for minutes and back drive like the brush hogs do, finish mowers do not have heavy stump jumpers or heavy blades on them, and if you get in the rough stuff you will bend the blades, if your riding mower shouldn't mow it, the finish mower on the tractor shouldn't either, mine has a big sign on the deck, " for grass only!"

The last two post here are talking about ORC's. The original poster asked about a slip clutch not an ORC.

Now I'm wondering if he really meant a slip clutch or an ORC?

You have slip in the belt. How much it will slip depends on how tight the belt is.
Best to use a Finnish mower in areas where you won't be hitting stuff.
It don't take much to break the spindles. I tried using Finnish mower for the first
couple of years to do brush hog work till I wised up and bought a brush hog.
What I paid for spindles and belts would had more than paid for the brush hog.

fusion, if you're talking about a slip clutch, first check to see if your mower uses a shear pin setup. i have an old side discharge king kutter and it uses a bolt to hold the drive shaft to the shaft of the mower's gear box, so no clutch needed (as long as u don't go and put a grade 8 bolt there ;) ).

(quoted from post at 16:20:59 05/12/16) Yeah I do wonder.. The belted finish mower vs rotary is usually an orc question.

My Woods rotary mower has a heavy stump jumper on it and takes forever to spin down. The main reason I like the ORC is because I don't have to wait for it to spin down and stop before I can shift the trans as in going from reverse to first or shifting back into first after a momentary stop. I don't mow around buildings or cars so I've never had the mower push me.

Don't know anything about how a finish mower would push a tractor if it even would.

it will push it, cary, but not far. i like to start my mower up in neutral just to look and see everything is ok. did that the other day, all looked good, stood on clutch and put it in second without thinking, and the mower pushed me a foot or two.

I ran my woods rotary mower quite a while without an ORC and don't think I ever experienced it pushing my tractor. I wonder if having my heavy Davis FEL on the tractor made any difference?

more weight = harder to push.

i thought of this thread when it happened. i also thought about all the threads that talk about (probably MY) oil-soaked brakes.

it probably didn't even move a foot, come to think of it - but it was a noticeable lurch which sure caught me offguard. the mower was running at full speed, then i put in the clutch and shifted immediately.
