Can't seem to recall when Ford added the solenoid to the starter. Was it 43 or 44?

Can't answer your question Tim, but here is a picture of a "44" 2N I had that shows the starter.

since my 47 2N has no solenoid, this sounds right to me.

I suspected that was the case, but I just had a starter rebuilt, came off an 8N parts tractor, and it has a " FORD C-4 " casting date code stamp on the housing. I asked also because I believe by the 8N Model Ford stopped using date code stamps on the starters and generators, might need clarification...
