PTO revision?

I have a '52 Ford 8n and I want to run a Woods Finish Mower with the PTO...but the PTO on the mower is about two inches too long for me to hook-up. Can I cut the PTO shaft on the mower to fit or am I asking for trouble? Tired 8n

You can cut the PTO shaft down to fit, but take careful measurements first so that when it's down the square end will be properly engaged to drive the unit. Also make sure when the mower is fully up there is no binding. This is done fairly often with various pieces of equipment. I had to do the same thing on my shredder. You will also have to cut the telescoping guard down as well.

Download a copy of the owner's manual from the Woods website (if you don't already have one). There will (should) be instructions on how to cut the shaft. If not, I'm sure a quick Google search will get you what you need.

If you cut it too short, the halves might come apart and could injure or kill you, so take the time to do it right and be safe.

I cut a little off both ends of PTO for my RM59 on my 9N .
PTO shield needed a trimming too as I remember..

Is there any "rule of thumb" as concerns the distance of the end of the PTO shaft to the end of the grooved shaft on the 8n? Do I need to cut the shaft so the PTO is just able to slip on or should I allow myself an inch or two so that I can easily slide the PTO on after hooking up the hinch pins and drag link? Thank you very much for your help!!! tired 8n

It's not rocket surgery - cut it so it can be easily fit up and no shorter. In general you cut equal mounts from both halves and retain as much overlap on the two PTO sections as you can. Never know what may come up in the future

As others have said, you cut the drive line
to length. It needs to be the correct length
or it will jamb the drive line into the pto
of the tractor when you raise the lift with
the mower attached and damage the pto.
Don't cut it too short either.
If you ever upgrade to a bigger tractor the
length of the 3 point arms may be different
and you will end up with too short of a
shaft.

I use an 8n and a 3000 for mowing . The 8n has an over run coupler and needs a shorter shaft . The shaft I pieced together for the 8n only had 10" or so overlap when lowered . I used that shaft on the 3000 for a couple of hours until ......

If you just have one tractor then there is not a lot to be concerned with . If you have another tractor or plan on getting one then you may want to study the length before cutting .

Before you saw it off study it a bit,
some the coupling gets sawed off the end
and rewelded on the tube. Other types
the tube is the coupling and can simply
be cut any length needed
