What in the World??? Cost for Hand Crank???

Any body got a "N" hand crank that they would let go for something less than its weight in gold?

Did Ford gold fill these when people weren't looking?

I would like to have one, but the prices I'm seeing (59.99 + shipping) are frankly just stupid.

I think I could bend one, and add the drive...

there is a drawing on 'the other site' you can download for FREE and make your own...The original was 11/16" diameter but the drawing shows to make out of 5/8 bar steel. Email me if you need to know how to get there..

Maybe I could paint a Picasso and sell it for a couple million ? These aftermarket parts are not antiques with the Ford logo .

Have you tried this site?

If not Just 8N's has them.

I use the hand crank from my Farmall Cub.
Works fine for rolling the engine over, etc.
I haven't had to use it to actually start an N.

Well, if you are not in to 'authentic', the Jack handle from an mid to late 80's Mazda pick up fits. HTH

Doubt you could buy a bar of 11/16 steel for that price! I'm curious why this guy needs a hand crank anyhow

dont know why a hand crank is wanted, unless its for a rare now mag equipped tractor,or just for a show accessory, hand cranking a mag ignition tractor is not too bad, i do it with one of my cubs sometimes, but hand cranking a battery ignition tractor is darn near imposible, with out the mag impulse you cant hand crank the engine fast enough to start it

If you've never hand cranked an engine you have missed out on one of life's small pleasures. I did it often as a kid and while of course I'd rather just turn on the key and hit the starter it was always kind of fun.

(quoted from post at 20:05:31 05/03/16) I do not know what "the other site" is. Could you give me a clue?
Thanks

dont know why a hand crank is wanted,

I pulled the old tired 8n in the shop yesterday for a motor rebuild and a few other small things . I will be replacing the cool looking ratchet bolt with a plain bolt . The next guy that has to change the fan belt will thank me . It is not like anybody even notices its there ???

I was giving the old girl a tune up and I was / am looking for a crank handle in order to turn the motor over to set the initial timing on an 8n side mount...

I don't "have" to have it, however would be nicer than playing " bounce the motor" with the starter, and then trying to "fine tune" with a larger screw driver on the ring gear.

I found a drawing / scan from the original dearborn print on the "other site" but it was virtually unreadable. If anybody has access to one, Id love to see it.

Going from commentary on this thread, 11/16" (or 5/8" ) main rod is easy enough. Without having to play the "cut it to fit / beat it to match" game, does anybody have the following dimensions:

Pin diameter
Pin Length
Pin hole distance from end

I think you can figure out all the rest with a tape measure on the tractor itself?

[b:a4146b58ff]Actually[/b:a4146b58ff], if you never planned on starting it with the crank....

The bolt idea is a good one. you could just use a ratchet with a long extension to do what I need. What size bolt is that? Something esoteric an weird or something standard?

I've started my tractor just for fun once, but I used it on a tractor I bought that had been sitting for years first to make sure the engine wasn't stuck. Then after I brought it home I put ATF in the cylinders and used the crank to slowly turn it over.

One of my 8Ns has a so-far undiagnosed starter problem. To get me through last fall and to let me drive into the shed for the winter, I resorted to a hand crank and found I could usually get it to start with five or six cranks. Maybe having a 12-volt conversion helped. Regardless, it wasn't a big deal to start it with the crank, although I relied on my experience with an old hand-cranked Case back in the 1950s. I think I started the 8N with the crank eight or 10 times before putting it away for the winter. HOWEVER, I haven't tried it yet this spring, so....

nnalert sells one for $28 -might be worth it after you buy the material and try to make one yourself...It's most likely a new repop, not an original but hey if it's what you want...
