If these are standard size and I wanted to just get through the summer before complete rebuild, could I emory cloth journals and use the .002 bearings? Journals are scored and will need a machinist attention no doubt, but just want it running for summer.

Michigan engine bearings Part# 5510 made by D.A.B. Industries Inc. Looks like you have standard size,Probably they have been made in 1967.

What are we working on here, what symptoms does it have. If a gas engine just moderate low on oil pressure, polish and put in new and likely be just fine for home use. If it's a diesel or has a bad knock and you planning to run it hard in a gravel bank 40 hours a week that's a different story.

BobMsc,The answer is Yes/No,That would depend on your skill level and if the rod journals are egg shaped or not. Then get the final clearance correct to make it last.

Only if you don't expect to put many hours on it before you do it right. The scored and roughed up journals are not going to form a proper oil film and the new bearings are going to wear very quickly.

I will get my hands on a mic and check journals for specs and egg shape. just using maybe 20 hours a month tops to maintain drive.

Gas engine and maybe 5hrs a week. Has to be rebuilt after this summer as it has bad blowby through crank case out oil breather, bought it not running and was not aware how neglected the old machine was.

If it has oil pressure, not spun a bearing, not knocking bad, I would put it together, run 15-40 and have at it.

You can use the .002 undersize bearings if, when installed, the oil clearance is in specification. If it is not, DO NOT use the bearings. Green plastigage will tell you roughly what taper and clearance is provided you use the Plastigage across the entire journal.

Bob,

If you are going to just nurse it through the summer with minimal use, so as to not make your rebuild more complicated and/or more costly, I would definitely run 20W50.

Mic'd the journals tonight. Forgive the spelling...
#1 2.082-2.075
#2 2.083-2.079
#3 2.081-2.079
#4 2.082-2.070
Like I said just a patch to get through summer, Turn crank and overhaul next winter.(pistons etc.)
Appears to me I should get .010 bearings.... Thoughts?

I think you are wasting your time. If I understand those measurements your crankpins are way out of round - #1 by .007 and #4 by a whopping .012. The only one that's even close to usable is #3.
