rear axle seals

guys I am confused. on my 48 8n had two different brake issues. the right side had a visible leak and would not stop the tractor. the left side did not leak but would grab and go from no brakes to full lock. several on here had told me from the photos it looked like I had worn out hubs. I have ordered new hubs and seal retainers. When I took the assemblies apart I found two different conditions. The non leaking side doesn't have a cork or rubber gasket at all. there were no shims only rtv any where on this side.

the leaking side has a cork gasket at the bearing 4 metal shims and I think what was once a cork gasket.

where I am lost is on the FO-4 it shows two #8s are both needed? neither side had one

should I order a few sets of the paper shims or reuse the old metal ones. or should I just use RTV?

on the one that had a bad oil leak should I pull the axle and check the seal #23?

these new hubs are about 1/4" taller than the ones that were on it and shoulder that was against the #11 axel retainer were work to a 30deg angle.

I also found out the axle retaining nut was only hand tight.... I guess I'm really strong and can loosen a 450lb/ft bolt with my bare hands.

The drawing shows the oil leak path (purple) that it was designed to stop. RTV between good tight hub & axle will likely be as good or better than #8 (use both seal & RTV).
I reuse the metal with RTV, but paper works too.
No need to pull axle to check outer seal 23, as it runs against hub.
Your older 8N should not have an inner seal.....those were a later addition & the axles & trumpets #22 are different to accommodate them.

I bought a tube on ebay delivered to my mail box for $7.75 after I looked up OReillys price of $10 something plus tax .

I looked up the serial numbers for the addition of the inner oil seals . Unless it is a 52 model it will have just the outer seal , then about 1/3 of the 52 models did not get the extra seal .
