Loose Steering On 9N

The steering wheel will turn either direction about 2 inches with no movement of the linkage to the front wheels. Does that necessitate a rebuild of the steering box or are there some adjustments that would take up the slack?

Most likely the gears are shot. The only way to adjust them is to remove them and add washers to take up the slack.

I had a similar problem with my old 9N ford. I replaced both left and right sectors as well as the steering pinion. When I took the steering box apart the pinion teeth were worn to sharp points and the faces of the sector gears were also badly worn--plenty of lost motion before any wheel movement. After the repair everything was tight and no lost motion.

When I bought my 9n. It was very loose. I tore it down to adjust. Found out I didn't have any gears left. Razor blades is all I had.

This was 1999. I think it cost me $480 for all three gears.
