9N safety neutral switch sticks on

I bought a used but running 9N. The safety starter switch was bypassed. I bought a new one, installed, and it requires the shifter to be exactly centered in neutral and then the safety switch sometimes sticks on keeping the starter running. The switch shaft seems to spring-retract but the switch sticks on. Jiggling the shift lever a lot or going into and out of gear is required to free it. Anyone run into this problem? Any suggestions? Thanks for any help.

robably not the switch, but the rod/linkage parts.

I doubt the new set is the problem. I would start by making sure
the horizontal rod moves free. It could be rusted up,full of
muck,or slightly bent.

Thanks for the reply. I did stick my finger in the hole where the switch mounts before installation. I felt the end of a rod that moved in and out, didn't seem to stick but then it doesn't stick every time. I did notice the lubricant looked dark like it was not the mineral oil recommended. Could that cause sticking?

Have you removed the button on the transmission top? The rod on
the end of the button could be bent. Also under the button is the
little rocker. It could have a problem.

Thanks for the reply. In answer to your question, I did remove the button on the transmission and lubed it's spring mechanism. Thats where I noticed that the tran fluid was dark kind of like 90 weight oil. So I wondered if that had any impact over time, since mineral oil was originally specified.

I just moved it under my A frame so I can remove the front scoop and frame to put on my newer 8N, so I suppose I'll find out when I start tearing into it for other problems as well. Thanks to all for your help.

.What is the part number of the switch you bought??

9N11450A Is for a 1939-1940 9N with a dash mounted switch that is slightly longer than

[b:0f1a3d3497]9N11450B[/b:0f1a3d3497]

Thanks for the reply. The 9N was manufactured in 1947 according to the serial number. The switch I bought is a 9N11450B version so I think it's the correct one.

1947 = 2N. all 2N serial numbers were still stamped with a 9N prefix.
