My 8N sat for the winter as usual I went down to start it up. charged the battery to 97% will not turn over. I can hear the selinoid clicking still nothing. Took the battery to be checked said OK even tho it is 5 years old. So before I go tearing into her I thought I would seek expert advise as to what to do. I cannot turn the engine by hand crank is not accessible

first thing i'd do is take all the primary electrical connections apart and make sure they're all clean.

that's both battery cables at the battery, ground at the body, other end of the cable from the battery to the solenoid, and both ends of the cable from the solenoid to the starter.

6v or 12v?

The solenoid is making a noise because of low voltage. That is likely caused by:

1. A weak battery (charge it & check it per tip # 49. Or get it load tested.)*

2. Dirty grounds/connections (remove the cables & clean the connections)

3. Bad cables or incorrect sized cables (replace them - see tip # 41)**

4. Bad ground between the starter & the block. (pull the starter away from the block & clean the mating area - see tip # 36)

* No matter what else you do, the battery must be fully charged. A float charger is helpful; not a trickle charger, but a float charger. (I use Battery Tenders on all my tractors) If you need to jump it, see tip # 43. No, it doesn?t need to be 12v. Plenty of N?s start just fine on 6v in below 0* temps. Your battery loses 33 percent of its power when the temperature dips below freezing, and over 50 percent of its power when the temperature falls below zero. A fully charged battery will not freeze until -76?F; however, a fully discharged battery can start to freeze at 32?F. So??keep the battery fully charged!

** You can't see corrosion under the insulation.

Gerry22,The starter drive may have stuck and is in a bind at the flywheel.Loosen the starter bolts some and shift it into 4th gear and rock it back and forth hard with the back wheels while listening for it to pop loose and watching the fan for movement. The drive may have stuck if you tried starting it when the battery was low.

I knew you guys would fix the problem I agree with the electrical however I am still suspect of the battery I am taking it to another parts store tomorrow and do a load test. A battery can fully change but not take the load. Again this battery is 5 years old. Batteries in this desert are short lived.

it's ok to jump a 6 volt tractor with 12 volts. just be sure your lights are off, or you'll be replacing both bulbs.

Bruce beat me to it, and ill add you can run your 6v on 12v temporarily to test, just don't use lamps and disconnect charge device.

That is.. If its on points.. If ei, then no.
