Brake Drum Removal Ford 9N

I want to change out the brakes on my Ford 9N. There are two studs that protrude from the back side of the drum. One is about 1" long and the other about a half inch. Are either of these the adjustment to tighten the brakes and do I have to loosen either one to remove the drums?

Also, do I just remove the bolts on the back side of the drum to pull the drum? Is any type of puller necessary? Any tips on removing the drums so that I might service the brakes?

I could not find a good video on line to see the process.

kc.........yer gonna play billy-h*ll tryin' to remove yer brake drum without relaxin' the brake shoe adjusters. The BIG one is fer yer BRAKE PEDAL. Dunno what the little one is. .......HTH, the amazed Dell

The big square thing on the left in your photo is the brake adjuster. When you pull the drum the axle comes out as well, so be prepared,
because it's heavy. I drained my tranny, three plugs if memory serves me, first, Did the brakes, added sure seals, and new tractor fluid. Do
yourself a big favor, and purchase the I&T shop manual for the tractor. I photocopied mine, and put the copied pages in plastic page protectors
in a three ring binder, very handy when your hands are greasy. The original is up in the library, (bathroom) so that I can look over jobs and order
parts,etc. ahead of time.
When you go to fill the tractor with tractor fluid, remove the lowest bolt on the side inspection cover. Add fluid until it starts to come out the bolt
hole, stop. Replace the bolt. This will help keep fliud off of the brake pads. The dipstick will show low, but it's fine.

Remove all the bolts (looks like 6) that hold the drum and brake backing plate to the axle trumpet (the drum, axle and backing plate are captured) Once you have the axle/drum/backing plate pulled out of the trumpet and standing on the floor loosen the adjusters and fudge with it till you can wiggle/pry the brake backing plate out of the drum/axle assy.

Once you get it apart and clean up the mess you can fix it correctly are join the Sure Seal club and beach about how Ns don't have good brakes... There is plenty of info here on how to hack this job it must come with a merit badge are sum"N,,, What ever you get it must be a nice prize cuzz folks are real proud of there hacked up job...

You can do a search for Jeb2n are Dan

Here is a very nice break down of the 9n and 2n brakes. Has a lot of step-by-step instructions as well as pictures to go with them. Was very helpful when we first got our 9n a couple years ago and had a very common problem with bad seals that allow the rearend oil to soak the inside of the brakes

Listen to everyone when they say make sure to add the Sure Seals...should also replace the main seal even though it is some work having to remove the pressed on bearing to get to it but having both replaced is some nice assurance that all of your hard work isn't in vain later on down the road if one of the seals should go bad.

Here is a very nice break down of the 9n and 2n brakes. Was very helpful to us when we first got our 9n and found out that the oil coming out of the drum area was because the seals went bad and oil was then able to enter the brake drum and soak everything.

Listen to everyone else when they say to use the Sure Seals. We also recommend replacing the original seals even though it can be a bit of work having to remove the pressed on bearing to reach the seal which is at the end of the axle, but having both replaced gives a overwhelming assurance that if one seal ever goes bad, you still have the other seal to prevent your brakes from getting soaked and then another timely and laborsome job to redo
