The brakes are pretty crappie on my 8n as said in previous postings. So I took apart the drum and there was some old oil caked in the drums. Not much fresh oil. How hard is it to replace the axle seals? Is there anything i can do to band aid them to get
them through the first hay cutting

First place get a TO manual (available through this site http://www.yesterdaystractors.com/FO_9N2N8N_SV_6311.htm and farm stores). It's not hard to replace the seals. Couple/3 hours should replace both sides. New shoes and brake cleaner for the drums and you should be good to go. Worst part is getting the hubs off. I have a puller so it's easy for me. There are some others on here that can tell you other ways to get them off.

(quoted from post at 09:22:37 04/26/16) early 8n has 1 seal, late 2.

I just bought a pair of rear seals for before SN 486753 . I bought out a tractor salvage of all of his N's and parts about 15 years ago . I got to thinking about the pile of rear ends and wondered if I had the late model set up .

No luck on finding a late model . I did a little research and found only the last 37,323 of 524,076 had the better seals .The odds are pretty slim .
