Off topic-Valvoline-Chevy

Forum,
Do I have a case? Last summer I went to a quick change Valvoline for an oil change. They put in the wrong oil 0-20 instead of 5-30. Knew there was problem when the oil
gauge seemed out of order. Checked around and a mechanic mentioned there is oil with a 0-20 viscosity. When changing the oil to 5-30 the oil gauge read as it should. Two
days ago the engine began to rattle. Brought it to a reputable mechanic and sounds like bad rod bearings. What would you do?? The engine has only 70,000 miles on it. Any and
all thoughts welcome.

The SAE 0-20 is not going to take the engine out that quickly if at all. Look elsewhere for help.

TOH,
Thanks for the reply. Problem is I believed the manager that 0-20 would not hurt my engine. I did not change the oil for between 2-3000 miles of summer driving. Any other
thoughts are welcome.

HFJ,
Thanks for the reply. I talked to Valvoline this morning and explained what has happened since last June. Valvoline tried to tell me on the receipt is shows 5-30 was used. I told
them someone used the wrong filler line! I am not a happy camper :) I will find out how much damage was done later this week and will proceed as needed. Thanks again for the
reply.

Year and engine size. :?:

Lets rule out the oil and filter and see if there were any other issues that may have caused your problem....

At the bottom of this post is a pix of a oil filter I took off a 02 chebby pick'em ups 5.3 are a 4.8. I have seen two of these its not normal. One did get the bearings this one is gonna go till it dies.

Get a pix of the filter if it gummed up and not spit shine clean you will not have a leg to stand on if you go after them (If they are willing to fight it)...

If it went 2/3K after the service I don't see them being at fraught I am not ruling it out just say'N...

" Brought it to a reputable mechanic" He should have been doing the service on it from the get go not a Wamm Bamm thank you Mamm quick lube...

The new pickups run 0-20. Even with a gauge there should also be a light. If the light wasn't coming on at a hot idle then it had enough pressure to lube things. It was probably lower than you would like, but it had oil. You said it takes 5-30. It's not like it was supposed to have 20-50 in it. Of course, it's easy for me/us to downplay your situation with a pickup that doesn't rattle in the shed. Bearings are a knock and main hearings are more of a deep rumble. I wouldn't consider bearing damage a rattle sound.

Note to self - if the oil get changed and then the gauge seems wonky it's not a coincidence.

Like mentioned above for the last several years that oil has been the recommended viscosity for these trucks. I seriously doubt your problem has anything to do with what oil was used. There are a few problems with these engines, noises, oil problems etc. I am waiting to see what the reputable mechanic finds.
