1952 8n Question on trans input seal

I have my 1952 8n split to fix a loose oil pickup line and while I am at it I am replacing clutch/pressure plate/throw out bearing and trans input seal.
When I took it apart there was no gasket on input shaft assembly just 2 shims ,one 13 thousands, and one 4 thousands thick. NO gasket and NO sealant on it of any kind. The shims came right out with no hint of any sealant any where.
The gasket I got is only 8 thousands thick
Do I just put it back with the shims that were there, no sealant OR, a light smear of RTV silicone on shims and bolt it back to the transmission.
The rear main was leaking and the housing was covered inside with oil but I think it was from the rear main.

Sealant on the the paper gasket is not necessary. As for the shims, I don't believe they should be there. Sounds like a Sherman might have been installed at one time and the previous mechanic failed to remove the shims.

Thanks Colin, I have done one the and didn't remember any shims being there. I don't know the history of this tractor, i picked it up last year and this is the first chance i have gotten to work in it.
