8n resistor

i am new just picked up an 1950 8n i am trying to start it do i need the resistor? i just put a tune up on it and coil,and i noticed they jumped the resister with a toggle switch
 
I'm assuming this tractor has a front mount distributor.
On that assumption, it should have the original ballast resistor.
Whether or not it needs an additional resistor depends on
whether it is 6V or 12V and which coil you have 6V or 12V.
6V system - nothing additional
12V with a 12V coil - nothing additional
12V with a 6V coil - added resistor of the correct value.

The original ballast resistor basically bypasses itself when cold.
Resistance then goes up with heat to limit running coil current.

It looks like this and is mounted on the back of the dash.
