"Great idea of using the black drain hole."

Do you really think the temperature at the sensor mounted externally to the lower part of the block with no coolant flow within a couple of inches of it has much bearing on the ACTUAL temperature of the water at the outlet area of the cylinder head (where temp gauge senders conventionally are located)?

What makes it worse is the elbow and pipe that move the sender away from the heat source you are trying to measure. I don't think its a great spot even with the sender going directly into the block. The coolant temps down there are not an indication of how hot the coolant or engine are.

Heat rises is one thing, cylinder head temps are the hottest part of the engine and cold water comes into the front of the block from the lower hose, it doesn't really circulate much around that area.

Here's the one I've used. True you don't need one when every thing is working right. But if you loose coolant there is not anything left for it to spit.
I have a manual gauge. No wires needed. Just the line from the sending unit to the gauge. Continues working with the key and engine off.
Gauge starts at 120 degrees. I lost one engine that over heated. Could had been save if I had a gauge in it. Don't leave the Barn With Out It.

Not sure where your coming from. I do like an oil pressure guage. Not really for how much the oil pressure is but rather to see how much the pressure fluctuates. might save you from blowing your engine. Amp meter is another I like because it will always tell you if your electrical system is working. sure saves on batterys as there not cheap anymore.

Would'N a temp gauge have the same value... Are some type of indicator outer than it huff'N steam out the radiator...

To go farther would anyone buy a new tractor that did not come equipped with some way to monitor engine temp.
