9n 2n 8n Aftermarket Seats

Due to having been paralyzed from the waist down, the muscles in my butt had deteriorated to almost nothing until approx the past several years that I have regained some control down to my knees and built a little muscle back.

The problem is that the original butt pan seats on the n-series tractors are literally a pain in my butt. We have tried quite a few things over the past couple years to add some padding but nothing that was very practical.

I started searching yesterdays tractor store as well a few other sites such as northern tool and came across what looks be a nicely designed seat.

Just wondering if anyone else had put one on their tractor and how good of quality are they...do they come apart at the seams, does the adjustments work smoothly, do they slide back far enough to have your legs comfortably over the brake pedal?

The following are made by A & I and are just a couple of the 4-5 of them that we found would fit the n-series tractors

HERE IS THE 1ST SEAT:

HERE IS THE 2ND SEAT:

I can tell you that 2nd one with the below arm side bolsters gets to be a pain when you're trying to twist around to watch behind you backing up to an implement. The suspension part is nice though.

I have put several of the 2nd style seats you posted. Have had several on for years with no problems. I love the adjustments, you can slide the seat back and forth for other operators quickly, not to mention the spring assist. I would recommend them to anyone, I get mine at Fleet Farm here in Northern Wisconsin. Usually under a hundred bucks.
Enjoy reading your posts and the pics.

Thanks :) We were going to go with the 2nd one but we found more people leaving some bad reviews for it because the seems were coming apart. Definitely liked the armrests (side supports) on the 2nd one since they would help my husband stay in position for when he is driving across the lower part of our yard which gets a bit steep. Could have the option to use a seat belt but we felt it would be better to not use one incase a situation came up that he would have to immediately get off of the tractor say if it started to tip...he already had one bad experience on his dad's Cub Low-Boy when he was driving across a steep hill on loose soil near the edge of the woods and the tire on one side started digging into the ground so far that it became unstable and started tipping down hill.

X2 on the second one. I've had mine on for about 3 years and like it a lot.I have serious back problems and it seems to help out mowing or moving snow for 3 or 4 hours at a time.

I'm glad to see this thread. While my 2N is down for maintenance I've been using the Kubota for mowing. While doing that my butt sez to me "perhaps ya should be looking for a cushion for the pan seat on the 2N." I think instead I may like to upgrade the seat to something like what's shown here. Would keep the old pan seat of course. Now if we could just do something about the lack of power steering ;)

I have the second one. Just put on on the 8n I build to drag a 6' finish mower also had one on one of my 4000 tractor. Has good back support,
adjustable spring for operator weight. You sit a little higher and adjustments can be made so you can slide it back if you are tall. the extra leg
room is a plus. The Bad, Depending on the use after a couple few years the seat covering may crack. I still use mine just cover it when not in use so
I don't get a wet butt.
I would NOT put seat belts on a tractor that does not have ROPS.
I just spent some seat time on the 8n doing garden prep and those seat are a lot more comfortable than the old pan seat.

There have been numerous threads about seats
over on the Ford board so more info there if
you want to do some reading about them.
I have never liked those aftermarket seats.
My biggest complaint about them is they are
relatively flat so you sit on the seat and
not in it. You will also sit up higher so it
helps to have longer legs.
My favorite seat by far is the deluxe seat
that were optional on the early 3 cylinder
tractors. They had adjustable, torsion bar
suspension. You sit in them, not on them.
They also have a short back for some lumbar
support.
There were a couple different ones so if you
go that route ask for more info.
I like these so well I have gone about
restoring a couple of them. New bushings in
the suspension, new seat, paint, etc.
Had more $ in them than an aftermarket seat
but to me they are worth it.

Thanks for the info and pictures :) Me and my husband definitely like the seats you showed in the 1st and 3rd pictures. I have been looking through yesterdays tractors forums and can't find this seat. Most of the results keep bringing up the Monroe seat which isn't particularly a seat we wanted.

Do you have the name and/or model of the seat you showed in pics 1 and 3?

I have a seat similar to the one in the first photo on my 4000.
Farm supply stores sell them. It was a bit of a project to mount
the seat. Had to do a little cutting and drill some holes in the
bracket.

Well my husband says that even brand new seats get cracked as soon as you sit on them

hey was he making a funny

If you do go this route, say find one in a bone yard keep in mind there were two different suspensions on them. Early and late.
The early style is readily identifiable by the crimped round pipe on the side. Those have a steel torsion bar and last forever.
The later ones used a rubber torsion spring which wear out. The rubber is still available from CNH but they are expensive.
I only like the early ones though the seat itself is the same on both types.

I was able to find new bronze bushings to rebuild the suspension at my local hardware store.

Do you have the name and/or model of the earlier seat? We found the later seat through image searches that eventually took us to ebay as well as other sites that have them for sale but couldn't find the earlier style because of not having a name or model to search for.

I have the same seat as Ultradog's on my Jubilee. IIRC he told me it was a Ford 2000 series. I had a complete left side hip job in Nov of 2013 and bought the tractor in May of the same year. Not that I have any experience with other tractor seats, but this one made left leg clutch work bearable with no lasting ill effect.

Mine is incorporated into an apparently rare and unnamed low tech air ride system where I pump up the cylinder with compressed air. Half of the moving arms at the back was broken off and gone so I built a new one. I didn't have bronze for bushings but I found that plentiful copper pipe was a perfect fit.

Hope you get what you need,
Terry
