6 volt or 12 volt

Hi folks. I am new to this site. I just inherited a 49 8n project, partially disassembled. I want to drive it on the trailer to bring it home. I'm not sure if it is a 6 volt system or if it has been converted to 12 volts. I need to get the right battery for it as it does not have one. I had it running for a minute with a 12 volt battery. Thanks in advance for your responses.

Does it have a generator or an alternator? That's the easiest way to tell. Alt, usually means 12v, unless you have a rare 6v alt like I did. Generator means 6v. Or,
it you turn it over with the battery, try measuring the voltage from the alt/gen.

Here's a pic of a alternator on a ford N.

"that doesnt mean anything"

Yes, it actually does. There is a 99% chance that it's 12v. If it's a 6v alt, which is rare on a tractor, you should be able to find a little stamp or something that says so. I'd put a 12v battery in it and drive it onto the trailer.

Thanks, I am inclined to agree with you. but KNOWING MY DAD, I would still like to verify the coil. He was the type of person who would think that an alternator and a battery was a 12 volt conversion.

Read Bruce's 75 tips. There's a ton of info in there you will find VERY helpful. There should be an inline white ceramic resister somewhere if it's a more "proper" conversion. I can take some pics tomorrow of things that will help you tell if it is a complete 12v conversion if that would be more helpful to ya.

t will run long enough to drive on to a trailer on 12v , even if it is all 6v.

odds are it's 12 volt. I did change a friends 8n over to a 6v alt with neg ground. He bought a new 6v battery before discovering
his problem was the old generator. Didn't make since to exchange a brand new 6v battery in for a 12 volt. I have the parts on hand
to finish converting him over to 12 volts the next time he needs a battery.

That's funny. I just giving the 6v battery I had got for it to a friend and got a new 12v battery. Heck, if you ever want a 6v alt I have one I doubt I'll ever use.

It pretty much is! Nothing else to change other than light bulbs if it has any. I wouldn't beat up your dad so much, actually you don't even need to change the coil just add a ballast
resistor and be on your way. Not as hard as you think and you seem to think your a good bit smarter than old dad
