I have a ford 8n side mount distributor while running it shows a constant 10 amp discharge. i tried re polarizing and checking the wiring to make sure its good but no luck. also after if turn the tractor off the voltage regulator makes this weird noise and continues to drain the battery. any ideas?

tmcguire........square can voltage regulator makes a weird noise and discharges yer 6-volt battery......and you kent figger it out??? Sheesh, are you that wet behind the ears??? And HOW didja re-polarize yer genny? To polarize yer genny, arc-spark yer side-by-side BAT and ARM terminals, ignition OFF. Me? I use a wide blade stubby screwdriver 'cuz its handy. You kenn use bailin' warr iff'n ya wants. Based upon yer complaints, byte the bullett and gitta NEW square can voltage regulator and POLARIZE it as instructed.........HTH, the amazed Dell

Yeah I'm new with this 6v system everything I have worked on has been 12v. I'll try to polarize it again when I get home and double check the wiring. I have polarized it before the same way you described it sparked but did not do any good.

You can polarize it all you an but it odes nothing to the regulator, what you are polarizing is the generator. The cutout relay in the voltage regulator can stick closed and it will drain the battery when not running but should not make it show a discharge when it is running.. The FO-4 service manual has a good section troubleshooting the charging system. Every N owner should have one.

Unwire Gen and reg

Start tractor

Jump field to ground on Gen, jump arm on Gen to the wire that was on bat.

As you go from idle to higher rpms, charge rate should follow rpm

I checked the wiring last night and had the arm and bat wires in the wrong ports of the regulator so i switched them around. after i switched them i polarized it and started the tractor. the ammeter was reading 0-2 charge with no discharge. i also did not run it very long.

ou need to connect a voltmeter to battery to verify charging. Based on your descriptions, it probably is not.
