8n fuel leak

I have a 1949 8n. The carburetor does not leak with a full tank of fuel, until I try to start it. Then fuel runs out of the carburetor air intake port.
I have rebuilt the carburetor with everything except the float.
I held the float in a container of fuel, no air bubbles and no fuel inside the float.
The float is set at 1/4 inch.

Any ideas

Jerry.........umm, woodja believe yer FLOAT valve is stickin'? There's been complaints about the rubber tipped float valve stickin'. 2nd thang, there supposta be a "paper" washer between the float seat and the carbie body. 3rd thang, don't turn yer glass bowl valve more than 2-turns. 4th thang, don't turn yer glass bowl valve ON until AFTER ya gittchur engine started. Simple, eh?.........the amazed Dell

The float could be hanging up on the side of
the bowl. Or the needle is sticking in the
seat. Does the needle have a brass or
plastic tip?
75 Tips

Jerry,Air cleaner choked up with dirt/water,mouse nests, dirt daubers ect.over choking at start up.Trash in the needle valve,Carb float hanging up inside the carb or needle valve leaking past, brass needle seat loose or no gasket.

Everything the others have said plus - make sure needle seat is really tight against casting.
I have one that needs an o'ring instead of a gasket because of a defect in the casting. You can check to make sure float and needle are
working by installing the carb without the lower bowl. Turn on the gas and manually raise and lower the float.

Bingo, Bruce.

VERY few set the float drop adjustment. If the float is allowed to drop too far, it can wedge against the side of the tapered float bowl causing flooding when the fuel valve is turned on.

This is especially common when one runs all of the fuel out of the carburetor upon shut down.
