My first tractor

Hello,

My name is Scott and I just got my first tractor. Yea!

Its a '39 9N barn find. It has been sitting un-used for the last 5 years. It was refurbished 10 years ago and was taken out of service because the head developed a coolant crack.

Its been converted to 12v with magnetic pickup on the dist.
Brand new rear tires too.

Otherwise it runs nice and smooth with no smoke.

Congrats on the new tractor Scott and welcome to the forum!
I see some really cool stuff on that machine like that front weight.

What are you planning on doing with it?
I'm assuming you are going to put it back to work.
They like work. They're not too fond of setting around. LOL

There are some good tip in the archives about soaking the rings
with ATF or MMO before trying to start one after it has been setting.
I would heed that advice particularly since it supposedly had a
head gasket leak and may have had AF in the cylinders.

That is an interesting front weight!

I would replace the rubber fuel line with a steel one. The rubber lines don't like the heat from the manifold.

I was not going to mention that right off but couldn't agree more!
A standard 1/4 inch brake line about 30 inches long works fine
and has all the right fittings on it already for about $4.

Ol Betsy is certianly going back to work. Need her to help maintain my horse pasture and riding arena. One of the reasons I bought her over some others I was looking at is she just looked so sad there gathering dust with nothing to do, and needing some TLC.

Yeah, that is a beast of a front weight. Probably at minimum 300 lbs.

I have a new sediment bowl filter and steel fuel line to replace the rubber hose and in-line filter. There were a number of posts I read prior that talked about how the in-line filter slows things down when they get a bit dirty with a gravity fed fuel system.

Thanks for the suggestion on some atf for soaking the rings, though it might be a bit late for that as I fired her right up and ran her for a couple of minutes.

I certianly will be posting more pics as she gets back into working condition.

With that much weight up front you might want to check you center axle pin for wear. You also stated it was taken out
of service because it developed a coolant crack in the head. I would make the necessary repair before running it.
Good luck and enjoy your new tractor.

Kirk

Getting rid of the sediment bowl was a mistake by someone. It is one of your fuel filters. Be careful because the tank may be soft there. If it is, I would replace the tank. They are not that expensive. How do you know the head is cracked?

Welcome to the board and congrates on the great barn find. Looks good from where I sit.
If your like me you sat in the rafters for a few days/weeks and learned there be a bunch of really smart folks here and are pretty free with their knowledge
